Heat Pump Installations Increase, but Solar PV Takes the Lead

Will Heat Pumps become more popular than Solar Panels?

The latest data from the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) in the UK indicates a significant rise in heat pump installations in the first quarter of this year. With a total of 8,790 installations, it marks the second-highest quarter in the scheme's history. In March alone, 3,176 heat pumps were installed, reflecting a 10% increase compared to the previous month and making it the third most successful month for heat pump deployment on record. However, the peak period for heat pump installations remains the first quarter of 2022, which saw 14,212 heat pumps deployed ahead of the conclusion of the Domestic Renewable Heating Incentive.

The number of certified heat pump contractors also saw a notable increase, with 95 additional contractors registered in the first quarter of this year, bringing the total to 1,494. This represents a 17% rise compared to the same period in 2022.

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is responsible for certifying, quality assuring, and providing consumer protection for microgeneration installations and installers. These installations encompass various small-scale renewable electricity technologies, including solar PV, biomass, wind, and heat products, in addition to heat pumps.

While the heat pump sector is experiencing growth, the latest figures reveal that installations of solar PV are still leading the way. In the first quarter of this year, 50,719 solar PV installations were recorded, indicating a remarkable 114% increase compared to the same period in 2022. Solar PV continues to be a popular choice for renewable energy generation in the UK, contributing significantly to the country's transition to cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.

The increase in heat pump installations reflects a growing interest in this technology as a heating solution, driven by the government's push for decarbonization. However, it is clear that solar PV remains the frontrunner in terms of renewable energy installations, capturing the attention of a large number of homeowners and businesses alike. Both heat pumps and solar PV play crucial roles in reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to a greener energy future.
